New England ~ Gypsy Thanksgiving Dinner

Great things are happening in the Travel Nursing Community. In an effort to promote travel nurse socialization and support, The Gypsy Nurse Ambassador Program was born.  As a part of the Gypsy Nurse Ambassador Program, we have organized events happening all over the country. The Gypsy Nurse Ambassadors work hard to bring you exciting and fun events as frequently as possible. In addition to meeting other Gypsy Nurses and having a Great time, you can earn your Gypsy Bracelet and Charm by attending an Ambassador sponsored event!   New England~ Gypsy Thanksgiving Dinner St Albans, VT This event was organized by your Gypsy Ambassador Cheryl Hosted By Cheryl Hurt and Lori Mercer in St Albans, Vermont Introductions and greetings,  We had 8 attendees and Honorary Gypsy ‘Gizmo’. Everyone brought a dish to share, we had food for a Gypsy Army. Turkey, Cornbread sage and sausage stuffing, Mac’n’cheese, Potatoes, Noodles, Cranberries, Greenbean casserole, Pumpkin spice cupcakes, Sweet potato Pie/cool whip, Reeces creme pie, Wine/Strawberitas, coffee, pepsi and diet coke, Dinner Rolls and Deviled eggs! Ironically 4 of these Gypsies found out that they live within 90 minutes of each other in their home state of Ohio ! Some Gypsies had to leave early because the dedicated Nursing duty calls them to work. All leftover food went to the Night staff at ST Albans Healthcare where all but one Gypsy is on assignment at and the Staff Loved it ! Lori and Cheryl wound the night down […]

Was ‘Scrubbing In’ Cancelled?

This entry is part 6 of 6 in the series MTV’s Scrubbing InWhen MTV announced ‘Scrubbing In’ was coming to the airwaves, it certainly made some waves. There was outrage within the nursing community. Outrage was expressed from every sector and position; starting with the nursing student all the way to the President of the ANA. There was little support for this new reality show featured by MTV.  Johnson & Johnson even received some backlash for it’s advertising during the show. Johnson & Johnson has long sought to fuse its image with the image of the nursing profession through the company’s Campaign for Nursing’s Future. Karen Daley, President of the ANA presented a letter to MTV’s president stating the ANA’s “disappointment at your depiction of nurses..” Calls to get the show cancelled began by Change.org before the show ever even aired. TheTruthAboutNursing.org was a key player in the petitions.  It’s interesting to note, however that TheTruthAboutNursing supported the drama Series ‘Nurse Jackie’ which I personally refused to watch due to the glamorization of a drug addicted nurse. In my opinion, this is much worse than exposing the after hour exploits of the nurses on Scrubbing In. The question now is: Was ‘Scrubbing In’ Cancelled? The Docu-series wasn’t cancelled but MTV responded to the outcry… 1. Less prominent air time – Starting with the episode airing November 14, MTV promised to move the air time of Scrubbing In from 10 pm to midnight. 2. Re-editing some episodes – Three of the six remaining episodes ofScrubbing In will be re-edited to […]

What travel nursing means to me

What travel nursing means to me  …getting to make dreams come true for my family. Guest Article written by: Michelle Lane On September 20 I arrived in Anchorage, Alaska for my assignment in Seward. I accepted this assignment because my baby sister, who I had not seen since she was 4, lives in Alaska. (I finally found her 5 years ago online. Long story short – bitter divorce between her mother and my father.) Me being able to come here not only gave me the opportunity to see my sister again, but I was able to make 2 dreams come true for my father, who is almost 77! 1. See my sister again. 2. See Alaska, which is on his bucket list. I want to personally thank each of you that helped me make this happen by giving a determined CNA the time and advice that brought me to this day. All of my Gypsy family- Thank You! Thank you Holly Fenn of Fusion Med Staff – this contract is more than a job!!! I can never thank you enough for all that you did, and continue to do. Myself, my father and my sister are forever in your debt!! THIS is because of all of you!  About the Author: Michelle is originally from Baltimore County, Maryland, a suburb area called Essex, where she lived until she was 15.  Her family then transplanted to Norfolk, Virginia. Michelle is married to ‘my wonderful husband’ Jay, and they have 2 daughters; Krysta (almost 22), and Kaitlynn […]
